I saw a program on the plague, and the doctors did indeed dress like that. The beak was stuffed with strong smelling things like herbs to ward away the plague. Indeed they thought the plague was brought by bad smells, and it was thought that burning pungent things in the neighbourhood stopped the plague. Indeed, it did work for a while, but more because the rats, whose sense of smell was acute, merely moved away to a different area because of it, since they were the carriers of the fleas that spread the plague.

A really nice picture, though I might have liked to have seen the streets a bit dirtier. A great picture none the less :)
